Browser extension privacy
Last updated October 12, 2026The Nook browser extension applies the focus rules you choose in Nook for Mac. It checks page addresses on your device and hides distracting elements on supported websites. It does not retain a browsing-history log, read your messages, or upload page contents.
Information handled on your device
The extension stores your current blocking rules and a randomly generated connection identifier in your browser’s local storage. Page addresses are processed locally to decide whether a page should be blocked. An address may be held temporarily to enforce a page exception.
The extension connects to the Nook app on the same Mac using the browser’s native messaging feature. This connection exchanges focus rules, selected-site permissions, private-window permission status, and rule acknowledgements so Nook can show whether protection is working.
Connecting a Nook focus session
If you choose to link a focus session on nookfocus.com, its session identifier, duration, and task label are passed to your local Nook app. This connection is limited to nookfocus.com and Nook’s local development address.
Network requests
The extension does not add analytics or advertising trackers and does not sell personal data. A blocked page may load Nook artwork from nookfocus.com. This makes an ordinary image request, which exposes standard request information such as your IP address to the website’s hosting provider. Your blocked-page address and page contents are not sent with that artwork request.
Limited use
Nook’s use of information received through browser APIs follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. Information is used only to provide the focus features described here. It is not sold, used for advertising, or used for creditworthiness or lending decisions. Any transfer is limited to the permitted uses in that policy.
Your controls
Each browser profile has its own permissions. Private browsing is optional and must be enabled by you. You can remove website access or uninstall the extension in your browser settings. Nook will then report missing protection where it is required.
Uninstalling removes extension data according to your browser’s normal behavior. Focus rules saved in the Mac app are managed separately in Nook.
Scope and contact
This policy covers the Nook browser extension. The Nook website and any separately connected services may have their own privacy terms.
